Op 26 oktober komt Josette Bushell-Mingo naar Amsterdam voor een reflectie op bi-cultureel leiderschap bij de Akademie van Kunsten ter gelegenheid van Black Achievement Month.

Het wordt een avond voor reflectie, healing en praktische oplossingen. Samen kijken we naar wat we als gemeenschap nodig hebben om onszelf in stand te houden. Waar putten we uit? Hoe wisselen we oplossingen uit en hoe koesteren we die? Vanuit haar persoonlijke geschiedenis, haar ervaring in de diaspora en de dagelijkse uitdagingen die zij  op het gebied van leiderschap ervaart, nodigt Josette Bushell-Mingo OBE ons uit in de cirkel. Wat ben ik bereid op te geven voor mijn gemeenschap? Welke verantwoordelijkheid heb ik en waar komen verandering en waarden samen?

Biografie

Bushell-Mingo is sinds 2021 hoofd van Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in Londen.Daarvoor was zij hoofd van de theaterschool aan de Stockholm University of the Arts in Zweden en internationaal bekend als actrice en regisseur in het theater. Zo werd zij in 2000 genomineerd voor een Laurence Olivier Award in de categorie Beste Actrice. Ook was ze de oprichter van het door mensen van kleur geleide kunstenfestival PUSH bij de Young Vic in Londen. In die stad is ze ook geboren, uit Guyaanse ouders. Over Arturo den Hartog

Arturo den Hartog is een Surinaams-Nederlandse countertenor en prijs- en publieksprijswinnaar op het Princes Christina Concours 2021. In 2017 kwam hij naar Nederland om te studeren aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Den Haag bij Rita Dams, Catrin Wyn-Davies, Robin Blaze, Pascal Bertin en Peter Kooij. Arturo is een veelzijdig performer met een grote liefde voor Opera, Barok- en Hedendaagse muziek.

Over Djuwa Mroivili

Pianiste Djuwa Mroivili studeerde piano aan het ArtEZ Conservatorium in Zwolle. Zij onderzoekt hoe ze klassieke muziek toegankelijker kan maken en experimenteert met genres om een breder publiek te bereiken. Tijdens de Keti Koti Club RIGHTABOUTNOW van De Nationale Opera bracht ze klassieke muziek van 'vergeten' zwarte componisten van de Afrikaanse diaspora ten gehore. 

Arturo den Hartog en Djuwa Mroivili treden vaak samen op waaronder in De Nationale Opera in Amsterdam, en onlangs ook bij 'Podium Witteman'.

Ivette Forster is televisiepresentator en directeur van het Kwaku Summer Festival.

Over Anthony Heidweiller

Anthony Heidweiller is directeur van de academy voor dans en theater van de Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten. Hij was eerder artistiek directeur van Vocal Statements, een organisatie die een brug slaat tussen de podiumkunsten en de multiculturele samenleving, en van diverse andere festivals zoals het Yo Opera Festival, het Opera Forward festival van de Nationale Opera en Ballet en het beroemde opera festival Festival d’Aix en Provence. In 2008 werd hem de Prins Bernard Cultuurprijs uitgereikt en in april dit jaar werd hij benoemd tot Officier in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau.

Over de Black Achievement Month-lezing

De Black Achievement Month-lezing wordt georganiseerd door Akademie van Kunsten en Stichting Black Achievement Month. Elk jaar nodigen we een denker, schrijver, kunstenaar of wetenschapper uit om inzichten te delen over hedendaags racisme. Eerder werd de lezing verzorgd door Aspha Bijnaar (2020) en door Vamba Sherif.

On 26 October, Josette Bushell-Mingo comes to Amsterdam for a reflection on bi-cultural leadership at the Society of Arts on the occasion of Black Achievement Month.

An evening of reflection, healing and practical solutions. Together this space is held to look at what we need as a community to sustain ourselves. What do we draw on and how do we share and nurture solutions. Drawing on personal history, current leadership challenges and diasporic experience Josette Bushell-Mingo OBE invites us to the circle. What am I prepared to give up for my community ? what responsibility do I have and where does change and values meet ?

There will be a sharing of reflections and observations then a practical change to answer questions and dilemmas we have. Together.

Biography

Josette Bushell-Mingo OBE is the Principal and CEO of The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and Artistic Director for The National Black Theatre of Sweden. She is a member of the board trustees at The University of London, UK and Chair of Equality and diversity at Conservatoires UK.

Previously the Head of Acting at Stockholm University of the Arts, Sweden, Josette is an award-winning actor and director whose career has included performances with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre and the Manchester Royal Exchange.  She was nominated for an Olivier Award, is the recipient of a TMA Award, and starred in the internationally acclaimed production Nina: A Story about Me and Nina Simone, now a documentary film for SVT Sweden. 

For 13 years, Josette was the Artistic Director for The National Touring Swedish Deaf Theatre ensemble Tyst Teater, where her work focused on fostering the understanding, respect and potential of sign language arts and the artistic, linguistic and cultural rights of the Deaf community. 

As a director, she was Founder and Artistic Director of PUSH, a Black-led theatre festival with the Young Vic Theatre.  Through her work with PUSH, she was awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to the arts, a Judy Craymer Award for Innovation, and the Southbank Cultural Diversity Award.

Born in London and based in Sweden from 2005 – 2021, Josette is an active spokesperson for inclusive arts and politics.  She co-founded PUSH’s sister organisation in Sweden, TRYCK, which works to inspire and challenge the artistic and cultural representation of Afro-Swedes and African descent artists on national stages in Sweden.  In 2021, Josette was awarded H.M. The King’s Medal 8th size with the ribbon of the Order of the Seraphim by H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf. 

She has served on the board of the Swedish Film Institute, as chairwoman for CinemAfrica, a Swedish Non-Profit organisation devoted to celebrating African and Diaspora film culture, and is Patron of the Unity Theatre, Liverpool. 

As a director and teacher, Josette travels internationally giving lectures and workshops in the creation of sign language theatre, cultural diversity challenges and inclusion.  She has taught in Stockholm, Malmö and Luleå theatre schools, LAMDA, the London College of Fashion, and New York University’s TISCH School of the Arts amongst others.

About Arturo den Hartog

Arturo den Hartog is a Surinamese-Dutch countertenor and prize and audience award winner at the Princes Christina Concours 2021. In 2017, he came to the Netherlands to study at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague with Rita Dams, Catrin Wyn-Davies, Robin Blaze, Pascal Bertin and Peter Kooij. Arturo is a versatile performer with a great love for Opera, Baroque and Contemporary music.

About Djuwa Mroivili

Pianist Djuwa Mroivili studied piano at ArtEZ Conservatoire in Zwolle. She explores how to make classical music more accessible and experiments with genres to reach a wider audience. During De Nationale Opera's Keti Koti Club RIGHTABOUTNOW, she performed classical music by 'forgotten' black composers of the African diaspora.

Arturo den Hartog and Djuwa Mroivili often perform together including at De Nationale Opera in Amsterdam, and recently at 'Podium Witteman'.

Ivette Forster is a television presenter and director of the Kwaku Summer Festival.

About Anthony Heidweiller

Anthony Heidweiller is director of the Academy for Dance and Theatre at the Amsterdam School of the Arts. About the Black Achievement Month lecture

The Black Achievement Month lecture is organised by Society of Arts and the Black Achievement Month Foundation. Each year, we invite a thinker, writer, artist or scientist to share insights on contemporary racism. Previously, the lecture has been delivered by Aspha Bijnaar (2020) and by Vamba Sherif.
